入学審査官を唸らせる論理的なエッセイの書き方とは？

そういや今頃って大学院留学のアプリケーション締切だったなぁと思い返し、明日提出の課題があるにも関わらず、エッセイの書き方についてまとめてみよう！と思い立つ始末。とはいえ、イチから英文をつらつら書き連ねるのは中々タフな作業です。TOEFL・GRE・推薦状・ GPA・レジュメと並んでアメリカ大学院留学の入学申請に必要なのが、エッセイ（Statement of Purpose）です。このエッセイは、受験生が自分の言葉で自分の経歴や熱意をアピールできる唯一の場であり、このエッセイで相手を唸らせる事ができれば、勝利への階段を一歩上ったと言っても過言ではないでしょう。ですが、何を書けば良いかは、各大学の入学要項などをきちんと確認して、ポイントを押さえながら書かなくてはなりません。Stanfordを例にして考えていきましょう。

Stanford University（各専攻ほぼ共通）（PDF）

The statement of purpose should describe succinctly your reasons for applying to the proposed program at Stanford, your preparation for this field of study, your study and research interests, future career plans, and other aspects of your background and interests which may aid the admissions committee in evaluating your aptitude and motivation for graduate study. Your statement should not exceed two pages in length (single spaced). If you are applying online, prepare your statement in advance. Make sure to set your computer to a Western European or other English language setting. We cannot guarantee the ability to print your statement if it is submitted in other settings.

つまり、上に書かれているように、 Stanfordのエッセイに求められる項目はこの5つ。
・reasons for applying to the proposed program at Stanford
・preparation for this field of study
・study and research interests
・future career plans
・other aspects of your background and interests
最低限この5つを過不足無く端的に説明することが、大学審査官を納得させるエッセイ作りの第一歩ということになります。箇条書きにして各項目に関して自分の歩み・考え・熱意などを書いていくと、頭が整理され幹が太いエッセイを書くことができます。ちなみにU.C.BerkeleyのSchool of Informationはこのような感じ。

U.C.Berkeley - iSchool

The Statement of Purpose should succinctly explain your reasons for applying to the I School, briefly review your relevant academic preparation and work experience, and describe your future professional goals once the degree is acquired. The focus should be on your preparation, experience, and aims rather than a discussion of the trends or the importance of information in general. The most successful statements are 1–2 pages in length and focus on the strengths and experiences of the applicant, providing the reviewers with evidence and justification for admitting those applicants who are qualified and well-suited for the I School.

The Personal History should include any relevant information not already included in the Statement of Purpose. Additional suggestions may be found in the Graduate Division's Personal Statement Guide. There is no minimum length for the Personal History.

The two essays are used in part to evaluate the candidate's writing skills. Pursuant to UC Berkeley policy, the statements must be written by the candidate her or himself. For admitted students, application materials must comply with the Code of Student Conduct.

というわけで、現在のトレンドの議論や情報の重要性の説明を書く暇があれば、アプライに際しての準備や今まで培った経験、自身の目的にフォーカスを当てて、求められている上記の3項目を最低限説明せよということです。ちなみに U.C.Berkeleyのエッセイに関しては、Graduate Diversity ProgramのDirectorの方が、Statement of Purposeの書き方に関するアドバイスを公開しているので、一度ご覧になると良いと思います（→Writing the Statement of Purpose）。

ということで、ここで言えることはただ1つ。アプリケーション要項で求められている必須執筆項目を細切れにして、その各項目を満たす自分の考え・経験・可能性などを過不足なく端的に述べることで、最低限入学審査官を満足させられるだけのエッセイは執筆できるということです。アプリケーション要項をよく読まずしてゼロから執筆する方が多いので、まずはこれを理解した上で執筆作業を始めることをお勧めします。

その執筆必要項目の味付けとなるのが、熱意・思い入れであったり、自分の独自性のアピールだったりするわけです。「何故うちの大学/専攻を志望するのか？」といった質問に対して、自主的にキャンパスビジットを行って担当教授にコンタクトを取って議論した経験であったり、自分の専門領域にピッタリのラボを見つけて共同研究や論文執筆などを手がけた実績であったり、この授業・研究内容が自分の将来のキャリア形成に直結していることを述べたりするなど、つまり「今」「○○大学の」「○○専攻でないとダメな理由」を実経験に従って熱く表現することで、（やはり入学審査官も人間ですから）ポジティブな印象を与えることができます。

また自分が他の受験生と比べていかにユニークな存在であるか、をアピールすることも忘れてはいけません。「社内プロジェクトで10億円の案件を任された」ことを書くとします。すると、この時点で数値的比較として「社内プロジェクトで11億円の案件を任された」人に負けてしまうことになります。ちなみにMBAはもちろん、他の専攻でも「社内プロジェクトで100億円の案件を任された」受験生は必ずいるので、もし自分が結果としての数値（売上・利益・獲得ユーザー数など）を記載するならば、その数値は他の受験生に必ず負けているという前提からスタートすることで、数値を単純にアピールするのではなく、その結果に到達する中で自分がどのような働きをしてきたか・どのような価値をもたらしたか、そしてその結果から何を学び以後生かすことができたか、などといったことを説明することで、審査官に自分の姿を想像させやすいエッセイが書けるわけです。対人関係（例：リーダーシップを以てどのように周囲の人を巻き込んで価値を創造できたか、チームプロジェクトを通じて自分の考えがどう変わってきたか）などを盛り込めるとより効果的になるはずです。

最後に。アプライするのは日本ではないので、あまりに謙虚過ぎるのは考えものなので、きちっと結果として自分が達成したゴールはきちんとそのままストレートに述べ、上にあるように、それまで・そこからのプロセスで「自分の独自性」を端的に説明するとワクワクするエッセイが書けるはずです！
